October 10 — World Mental Health Day

Published 10 October 2026 year, 10:00

World Mental Health Day is observed every year on October 10. The global community has been observing this day (World Mental Health Day) since 1992, following an initiative by a number of international organizations whose work is aimed at identifying the factors that influence the formation and development of the human psyche, mental balance, and, consequently, an appropriate response to the demands of life in the surrounding world. Overall, the goal of World Mental Health Day is to draw attention to mental health issues, raise public awareness, and promote access to psychological and psychiatric care. According to the World Health Organization, more than 450 million people worldwide suffer from mental illnesses, and, unfortunately, this number is on the rise.

Mental health is an integral part of a person’s overall well-being. It influences one’s ability to overcome life’s challenges, learn, work, build relationships, and participate in society. Amid the war and the constant emotional strain and uncertainty it causes, each of us faces an excessive burden on our mental health and experiences stress and fatigue. That is why it is important not to ignore our own feelings but to learn how to take care of our mental health.

Unfortunately, Ukrainians are not accustomed to seeking out psychiatrists on their own initiative. Specialists are concerned that people often seek help only in the final stages of a mental health condition, when it is already impossible to halt its progression.

In most cases, regardless of age, profession, or income level, a person can independently address a number of issues that concern them. But in some critical cases, consulting a psychologist, psychotherapist, or psychiatrist will be highly advisable or even necessary.

Even if circumstances cannot be changed, psychology helps us change our own attitude toward them. We must learn to maintain resilience and emotional balance in the most difficult situations, and, when necessary, seek help from the appropriate specialists.

Seeking support is a courageous step and a sign of strength—it helps us maintain our resilience and persevere in this war. Let’s take care of our mental health! Together, we will overcome any challenge!
