January 13 – 11th anniversary of the shelling of a Ukrainian checkpoint near the village of Bugas in the Volnovakha district by Russian terrorist forces

Published 13 January 2026 year, 14:10

On January 13, 2015, at around 2:30 p.m., Russian terrorists fired on a checkpoint located near the village of Bugas in the Volnovakha district using a Grad rocket system. The invaders fired more than 40 shells, one of which exploded near a Zlatoustivka-Donetsk passenger bus carrying civilians, killing 12 passengers and injuring 19 others.

Video recordings from the scene of the tragedy and rocket parts found there confirmed that the shelling was carried out using BM-21 Grad systems from the temporarily occupied Dokuchaevsk.

Observers from the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine came to similar conclusions based on the results of an investigation of craters from explosions at the site of the shelling of a checkpoint near Volnovakha.

Law enforcement agencies opened a criminal case under Part 3 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine in connection with the shelling of the checkpoint. The Prosecutor General's Office recognized this act as terrorism.

An investigation by the Security Service of Ukraine established that an artillery division of the Oplot motorized rifle brigade was involved in the tragedy. It was commanded by a Russian career officer.

On September 10, 2016, a memorial to the Ukrainians who died in the terrorist attack was erected near Volnovakha.

Unfortunately, Russia continues to use terrorist tactics, attacking Ukrainian cities and killing civilians. Today, on the eleventh anniversary of the shelling of the checkpoint near the village of Bugas, we honor the memory of all those whose lives were cut short by Russian aggression.
