October 17 marks the anniversary of the release of 108 Ukrainian women from Russian captivity.

Published 17 October 2026 year, 19:28

On October 17, 2022, one of the largest prisoner exchanges involving women took place, resulting in the return of 108 Ukrainian women. For each of them, this day marked the beginning of a new chapter in life following a long period of captivity.

Behind every release lies a personal story: the ordeals endured, months or years spent waiting, the anguish of loved ones, and the hope for a safe return. Beyond the statistics are real people—children, partners, and friends—who are waiting for their return.

The anniversary of this exchange is an opportunity not only to remember these women but also to hear their stories. Their accounts help us grasp the true cost of freedom and serve as a reminder of the need to keep fighting for every Ukrainian man and woman still held in Russian captivity.

The return of prisoners is the result of sustained effort, coordination, and cooperation among various institutions. The experience gained from previous exchanges must be carefully analyzed and applied to find effective solutions that facilitate the release of other Ukrainian citizens.

The "Numo, Sestry" ("Come on, Sisters") initiative emphasizes the importance of preserving the testimonies of these women, reflecting on the lessons learned from past exchanges, and intensifying collective efforts to bring all Ukrainians home.

For these 108 women, October 17 was the day they returned home. Yet, for many Ukrainian families, the wait continues. That is why it remains crucial to keep talking about those in captivity, to hold them in our memory, and to support their loved ones.

We remember. We are waiting. We continue to fight to bring everyone—every single person—home.

By the way: "Come on, sisters."
