80 years since the establishment of the United Nations

Published 24 October 2025 year, 07:00

On October 24, 2025, the world community celebrates the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, an intergovernmental organization established in 1945, immediately after World War II, to maintain peace and international security, as well as to develop cooperation between states in solving global problems. The UN Charter, which laid the foundations for its activities, was signed on June 26, 1945 by representatives of 51 founding states, including Ukraine, and entered into force on October 24 of the same year.

The Organization has six main bodies: The General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice and the UN Secretariat.

The main functions of the UN are:

  • maintaining peace and security - preventing future wars and maintaining peace in the world;
  • development of cooperation: promoting cooperation between states in solving economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems;
  • Protection of human rights: promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

This resonates especially with Ukraine today, as our country, as one of the founding members of the UN, is currently experiencing the most difficult test of its independence due to the full-scale war unleashed by Russia. This war reminds us of the importance of unity and cooperation of the whole world in the struggle for peace and justice. And in these difficult times, the UN continues to be our partner, supporting Ukrainians not only on the diplomatic front, but also through humanitarian missions.

Thanks to the UN assistance, safe spaces for women and children have been created, and the necessary psychological and medical support has been provided to those affected by the war. Despite the active hostilities and destruction, the international organization is helping Ukraine rebuild lives and working to ensure that Ukrainian communities have the resources to survive and develop.

And that is why on this memorable day Ukraine reaffirms its commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and emphasizes that international law should be a law, not a declaration.
