Day of Heroes: Yevhen Konovalets

1891, June 14 - Yevhen Konovalets, the founder and commander of the most capable military unit of the UPR Army, the Sich Riflemen Corps, founder of the Ukrainian Military Organization, head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, and one of the fighters for Ukraine's independence in the twentieth century, was born in the village of Zashkiv near Lviv.

At the outbreak of World War I, he was mobilized as an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army. During the battles for Makivka in the summer of 1915, he was taken prisoner by the Russians.

He returned two years later. He became one of the organizers of the Sich Riflemen.

After the defeat of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1921, he did not lose faith in the cause to which he had devoted his entire life. Although he was well aware that he had at least a generation of work ahead of him. To fight the invaders, he formed an underground Ukrainian Military Organization out of former officers of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Galician Army.

In 1929, he became the first head of the OUN, which aimed to revive Ukraine's state independence. He managed to unite representatives of different organizations and different generations. Both former army veterans and young people joined the OUN.

He has established ties with government circles and intelligence agencies in Lithuania, Germany, Spain, France, England, and Japan.

He died on May 23, 1938, in Rotterdam (Netherlands) at the hands of Soviet agent Pavlo Sudoplatov.
