Today, June 19, an information campaign is launching for the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. The campaign is initiated within the framework of Ukraine's presidency in the Global Alliance for the Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict (hereinafter - PSVI).

The goal is to draw the world's attention to the issue of sexual violence in the context of wars and conflicts, to strengthen international support for victims, and to activate global efforts to achieve justice.

On this day, members of the Alliance, both individual states and non-governmental organizations, as well as state and local authorities in Ukraine and beyond, speak with one voice against PSVI and the importance of achieving justice for victims, providing comprehensive support, and involving victims in decision-making processes.

“This is not just an information campaign, but a global voice in support of those who have experienced sexual violence during wars and conflicts around the world. It is part of the collective efforts of the Alliance to restore justice and provide assistance to those who need it most. Our goal is to strengthen international efforts to prevent the silencing of crimes, to hear and consider the voices of victims. Such crimes often remain 'silent' — and this is exactly what the Russian Federation seeks. That is why advocacy must be systematic,” said the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration - Minister of Justice of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna.

One of the key elements of the campaign is the rapeseed flower — a symbol of solidarity with victims of PSVI. This symbol was first presented in Ukraine in 2023 at a meeting of the Interagency Working Group on Combating Sexual Violence Related to the War of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The rapeseed flower is capable of sprouting even in the most difficult conditions, embodying the strength of a person who has experienced violence and their ability to recover. As part of the campaign, Ukraine calls on partners to use this symbol in their communications as a manifestation of solidarity with those whose experiences should not be forgotten.

On June 19, the world marks the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict (PSVI). The date was chosen in honor of the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 1820, which recognizes PSVI as a threat to international peace and security.

The Global Alliance for the Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict (PSVI Alliance) is an international initiative launched by the Government of the United Kingdom  in 2022 to prevent and combat sexual violence in armed conflict zones. The Alliance is an important forum for strengthening global efforts in this area, sharing experiences, and supporting victim-centered actions. Currently, the Alliance consists of 29 members: states and non-governmental organizations.

In 2025, Ukraine will preside for the first time in the Alliance. Among the main priorities for this year are the analysis of foundational documents and their improvement, strengthening commitments to create comprehensive reparations programs for victims, and researching best practices among member states of the Alliance to develop a practical guide containing effective measures for prevention, response to incidents of violence, and support for victims.
