Holodomor 1932–1933: Donetsk region youth joins all-Ukrainian dialogue of memory

Published 22 November 2025 year, 13:35

On November 20, 2025, the platform “Center for Unity and National Resistance” of Donetsk region, together with the Novogrodivska and Pokrovska communities, held a thematic online dialogue dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of Holodomor Victims. The event brought together active youth of the region who seek to better understand one of the most tragic pages of Ukrainian history.

The online meeting was dedicated to understanding the events of the Holodomor of 1932–1933 — the genocide of the Ukrainian people committed by the Stalinist totalitarian regime. The participants discussed the causes of the tragedy, the mechanisms of artificially creating famine, the policy of forced collectivization, the practice of “blackboards”, mass food seizures and other tools aimed at the destruction of Ukrainian peasants and the destruction of the social structure of the nation.

During the dialogue, special attention was paid to the scale of human losses. According to various scientific estimates, at least 3.9 million Ukrainians died as a result of the Holodomor, and about 600 thousand were never born due to artificial famine. Historians emphasize that for the Donetsk region, calculations are complicated due to the incomplete state of archives and significant demographic changes in the region, but we are talking about hundreds of thousands of dead residents of the region. These figures are not just statistics, but huge national wounds that have not healed for nine decades. A separate focus of the event was a conversation about historical parallels between the crimes of the Stalinist regime and Russia's modern aggression against Ukraine. Then Ukrainians were destroyed through artificial famine, deportations and repressions. Today, the Russian state continues this colonial policy: it deports Ukrainian children, creates inhuman conditions for prisoners, restricts the Ukrainian language and identity in the occupied territories. Times have changed, but the imperial logic aimed at suppressing the Ukrainian people has not changed.

It is important that it was the youth who became the most active part of the dialogue - they asked questions, shared their own thoughts and confirmed that awareness of historical tragedies is the foundation for the formation of a stable, conscious and responsible community. The youth of the Donetsk region know, remember, respect.

During the meeting, a lecture and an open conversation with the Ukrainian historian, candidate of historical sciences Gennady Yefimenko took place. He emphasized the importance of preserving the memory of the Holodomor, cultivating a respectful attitude towards bread and realizing that the Holodomor was a purposeful policy of genocide.

Every year on the fourth Saturday of November, Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Holodomor. This year, Remembrance Day falls on November 22. Everyone is invited to join the nationwide action and light a candle of remembrance - a symbol of the indomitability of the Ukrainian people and the light that overcomes darkness.
