On 30 May 2026, the ‘Panayir’ festival took place at the VDNG exhibition centre in Kyiv – a major celebration of Greek culture, music and traditions, organised by the Federation of Greek Societies of Ukraine.
The event brought together representatives of the Greek community, artists, educators, folk artists, young people and families from various regions of Ukraine. Representatives of the Donetsk Regional State Administration, the regional military administration and local communities in the Donetsk region also took part in the festival.
Festival guests had the opportunity to discover the rich cultural heritage of the Greeks of Ukraine through music, dance, gastronomy, crafts and interactive activities.
The festival programme featured performances by ethnic Greek groups and guest artists, a food fair with traditional dishes from the Greek communities of Ukraine and Greece, an ethno-lecture series on the history and culture of the Greek communities of Ukraine, sports and children’s activities, as well as a series of creative workshops for children and adults.
The organisers paid particular attention to creative spaces dedicated to the fusion of Ukrainian and Greek traditions. In particular, the Mykhailo Boichuk Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design presented workshops on making motanka dolls with elements of vybika, painting decorative plates, creating ceramic items and mosaics.
Visitors also took part in a masterclass on making Psatir – the traditional ceremonial bread of the Greeks of Donetsk Oblast – creating a ‘Greek Ornament’ paper cut-out, as well as interactive activities organised by the Mariupol Local History Museum and Mariupol State University.
For many years, the ‘Panayir’ festival has remained a special event for the Greeks of Nadazovya, uniting people around shared spiritual values, historical memory and cultural traditions. It is thanks to such events that the language, customs, song and ritual culture of the Greek people are preserved, the bond between generations is strengthened, and a unique cultural heritage is passed on.
The ‘Panayir’ Festival has once again confirmed the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of the Greeks of Nadazovia and developing intercultural dialogue. Holding such events helps to foster inter-ethnic harmony, cultural diversity and the spiritual unity of Ukrainian society, bringing together representatives of different national communities around shared values, historical memory and respect for Ukraine’s multi-ethnic heritage.
