The climate is changing — let's act together! Interactive meeting of the children's eco-parliament in Donetsk region

Published 14 November 2025 year, 18:01

On November 13, 2025, the Donetsk Regional Children's Environmental Parliament held its regular meeting in the format of an interactive Ecohackathon. Young parliamentarians focused on the topic "Climate Change: Global Causes, Local Consequences" and worked to find real solutions for their communities.

The DEP was joined by guests—candidates of biological sciences, associate professors of the Department of Physical Therapy, Physical Education, and Biology Iryna Kurilchenko and Iryna Kushakova, teachers at the Sloviansk State Pedagogical University.

The meeting began with a discussion of the main question: "What is the greatest threat to your city as a result of climate change?" The children worked with an interactive board, where they identified key problems—droughts, dust storms, reduction in green areas, air pollution, and drying up of water bodies.

Participants received a brief overview of local manifestations of climate change in the cities of Donetsk region: prolonged periods without precipitation, rising temperatures, water resource problems, soil degradation, and declining pollinatorpopulations.

After the discussion, the children took part in an Ecohackathon, working in virtual "Ecolaboratories." Participants considered five key areas: the relationship between climate and water, the impact of waste on greenhouse gas emissions, alternative energy sources, the importance of green spaces in cities, and the role of eco-communication in environmental protection. The children presented micro-projects, sought solutions, and proposed innovative ideas for adapting cities to climate change.

During the meeting, informational materials were presented on the impact of war on the environment and the results of the All-Ukrainian Climate Week, in which DOENC club members actively participated.

At the end, the participants adopted a joint resolution in which they defined further steps: to monitor green areas and water bodies, develop information campaigns on climate risks, and initiate changes in communities.

The young leaders demonstrated that they are capable of both analyzing global problems and proposing effective solutions for their city and region.
