July 20 marks the 55th birthday of Taras Oleksandrovych Dudka, a representative of the artistic elite of Donetsk region. The artist was born in the city of Sloviansk, studied painting under Yurii Savchenko, a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, and later earned a degree in cultural studies with a specialization in fine arts.

Taras Dudka has always drawn inspiration for his work from his native Donetsk region — its unique natural landscapes, the smooth waters of the Siverskyi Donets River, the free Ukrainian steppe, and rural landscapes. He was also inspired by the poetry of his father, the famous poet Oleksandr Dudka, with his profound philosophical understanding of the meaning of life, respect for working people, and love for his native Slovyansk region.

Since 2000, Taras Dudka has been sharing his creative achievements at regional, national, and international exhibitions, including the regional exhibition «East: Level of Freedom» (2021-2024), which showcases the development and achievements of contemporary art in the Donetsk region. The artist is also well-known in the European art space: he participated in the Art Fest «Kunst Am Berg» art project and held a solo exhibition «Ohne Krieg» («Without War») in Austria (2023).

The artist’s creative work includes participation in the all-Ukrainian project «East and West Together» and the regional avant-garde art project «ART-Step» (Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Horlivka; 2010-2015).  The artist’s works are in museums in Ukraine, and he has donated more than 50 works to the Donetsk Regional Art Museum.

Taras Dudka is constantly searching for new creative ideas, filling his works with new conceptual meanings and experimenting with color and form.

A special place in the artist’s work is occupied by plein air painting in the Slobozhanskyi region. Works created during the plein air workshops «Prelenskyi Plein Air» (2016, 2017), «Steppe Blues» (2017, 2018), «Flashback on the Canvas of the Steppe» (2019-2021), organized by the Donetsk Regional Art Museum, immerse the viewer in contemplation of the harmonious unity of nature and architecture of Svyatogorye, the chalk terricons of the Ukrainian Steppe Nature Reserve, Ukrainian antiquities of the open-air museum in the village of Prelesne with monuments of folk architecture, picturesque landscapes with neat houses and haystacks, etc.

The war entered the work of Taras Dudka, as it did the lives of all residents of the Donetsk region, back in 2014. The work «View of the TV Tower,» which depicts the TV tower in Slovyansk, has become a kind of memorial to the events of the beginning of the war with the Russian invaders, a symbol of resistance to Russia’s encroachment on the independence and sovereignty of our state.

«War is a great misfortune for the people. It destroys homes, destinies, lives, dreams. But light must defeat darkness for the sake of the future. Painting is a small ray of that very light that we are all waiting for...» This is the belief of Taras Dudka, who believes in victory, in the fact that Donetsk Oblast will be free and he will once again be able to create in his native land.
