Imagine this scenario: alcoholic beverages may only be sold to those 18 and older, while concentrated pure alcohol is available to everyone without restriction—even schoolchildren, who mix it with soda or “healthy smoothies.” It sounds completely absurd, yet this is precisely the dangerous reality that currently exists in Ukraine with regard to nicotine products.
Due to a loophole in the law, nicotine pouches (snus) can currently be legally and freely purchased by children of any age. This product, with its extremely high nicotine content, is not subject to the basic age and advertising restrictions that apply to conventional tobacco products.
Medical journalist and biologist Darka Ozerna, in a special column for the popular science publication “Kunscht,” explained why snus should not be viewed as a harmless novelty:
- High concentration of the substance: a single nicotine pouch can contain a dose that is dozens of times higher than the amount of nicotine in cigarette smoke, which instantly creates a severe physiological dependence.
- The illusion of safety: manufacturers often mask this dangerous chemical compound with bright, sweet flavorings, lulling children and parents into a false sense of security.
- Discreet consumption: the absence of smoke, vapor, and a distinctive odor allows snus to be used freely anywhere—in class, at extracurricular activities, or at home.
The perception of nicotine pouches as an ordinary snack or food product is a dangerous form of manipulation. Proper government regulation, the implementation of an 18+ age restriction, and limits on aggressive marketing are critically necessary steps to protect the health of Ukrainian youth.
