Rethinking colonial heritage: Donetsk region museum workers prepare a series of professional online coworking sessions

Published 11 February 2026 year, 12:22

The Donetsk Regional Museum of Local History invites to participate in a series of online coworking sessions aimed at theoretical reflection and practical analysis of colonial heritage, rethinking imperial discourses, and developing professional approaches to the decolonization of Ukraine's cultural and educational heritage.

The focus will be on historical figures, ideas, and institutions that operated under imperial restrictions. Their experiences will be examined through the prism of difficult historical choices between adaptation, compromise, and resistance, without identifying with the “imperial project.”

Museum professionals, cultural and educational workers, local historians, and representatives of the public are invited to participate. The key conditions for participation are a willingness to think critically, work with source materials, participate in professional discussions, and have your own case study for decolonization analysis, which participants will work on during the coworking sessions.

Meetings will be held online once a quarter on the Zoom platform. The introductory meeting will take place on February 25 at 10:00 a.m. Participation requires prior registration by 5:00 p.m. on February 23 at: https://forms.gle/mTArreqqSx2Svr128

The events, which will combine analytical introductions, work with practical cases, and professional discussions, will examine contemporary decolonization approaches to the interpretation of Ukrainian culture and education, in particular by rethinking historical figures and practices outside of colonial and Soviet narratives.

The results of the series of online coworking sessions can be used in the activities of museums and educational institutions to implement professional decolonization approaches to interpreting Ukrainian cultural and educational heritage.
