A symbolic performance marking World Refugee Day took place in Lviv’s Znesinnia Park as part of the Landart Festival. Participants planted a small-leaved linden tree as a symbol of remembrance, hope, and support for internally displaced Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes due to the war.
During the performance, one of the festival’s participating artists, Vlodko Kaufman, staged a “story with keys,” symbolizing the homes that people were forced to lock up and leave in search of safety.
The performance concluded with the planting of a tree as a symbol that these people live here and, so to speak, are putting down roots in Lviv. It also serves as a symbol of remembrance, faith, and hope, since the linden is a long-lived tree that not only blooms beautifully and smells wonderful but also bears lovely fruit that can be used to make tea.
Displaced persons from Mariupol, Bakhmut, Melitopol, Kherson, and the Luhansk region took part in the performance.
“The city of Lviv constantly cares for internally displaced Ukrainians and ensures that they feel at home and have everything they need for a fulfilling life,” said Volodymyr Holovaty, director of the Social Support Center.
