Prevention of Occupational Diseases and Workplace Injuries: Medical Examinations for Employees

Published 28 July 2025 year, 11:43

Medical examinations of employees are one of the key tools in preventing occupational diseases and workplace injuries. Their main purpose is to assess the health status of an employee and determine their fitness for specific job responsibilities. These examinations help detect early signs of work-related illnesses and enable timely interventions (Article 17 of the Law of Ukraine “On Occupational Safety” dated October 14, 1992, No. 2694-XII).

The procedure for conducting medical examinations is defined by the Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated May 21, 2007, No. 246, and includes the following types:

🔸 Pre-employment examinations (upon hiring);

🔸 Periodic examinations (during employment);

🔸 Unscheduled examinations (initiated by the employer or employee);

🔸 Annual examinations (for individuals under 21 years of age).

Mandatory medical examinations are required for employees:

🔹 Engaged in heavy physical labor;

🔹 Working in harmful or hazardous conditions;

🔹 Employed in positions requiring professional selection;

🔹 Under the age of 21.

The employer, at their own expense, is responsible for:

🔹 Organizing the medical examinations;

🔹 Covering the costs of in-depth medical evaluations for employees suspected of having occupational or work-related illnesses, and their medical rehabilitation;

🔹 Providing medical monitoring (dispensary observation) for employees at risk of developing occupational diseases.

Employees required to undergo medical examinations retain their average salary during their time at the medical facility (Article 123 of the Labor Code of Ukraine).
