Donetsk Oblast is not just a dot on the map. It is home. It is the streets we hurried down on our way to school, the parks where we walked with friends, the slag heaps that were a familiar part of the landscape, and the noise of the factories that signaled the city was alive. These are the places where we spent our childhood and youth, and where our dreams and memories were born.
Today, many of these places have been destroyed, are on the front lines, or are temporarily occupied by Russian invaders. But they continue to live on in our hearts, family photo albums, and personal stories.
In honor of Ukraine’s Independence Day, the Donetsk Regional State Archives is launching the “My Donetsk Region” project—a collective chronicle of memory created by the residents of our region themselves.
We invite everyone who was born in, has lived in, or has a special connection to Donetsk Oblast to share a story about a place that has forever remained in your heart. It could be your hometown or village, a favorite park, school, courtyard, workplace, square, river, or any other spot associated with cherished memories.
Your memories will become part of a collaborative project dedicated to Ukraine’s Independence Day and will help showcase the Donetsk region as its people remember and love it.
