A presentation of the audiovisual performance “People of the Landscape” by composer and performer Tetiana Khoroshun took place in Kyiv.
The Rumai songs of the Greeks of the Azov region became an important part of the project. To create the musical cycle, the artist worked with archival audio recordings of the song tradition of the Greeks of Ukraine, provided by the Greek community.
During the performance, these recordings took on a new sound—Rumei melodies were combined with vocals, electroacoustic elements, clarinet, violin, and cello. What had been preserved in the archival recordings became the foundation for a new contemporary work of art.
For the Greek community in Ukraine, such projects hold special significance. After all, preserving heritage begins with collecting—songs, recordings, photographs, documents, oral histories, and other materials that tell the story of the lives and traditions of the Greeks of Ukraine.
We continue to work actively on collecting and preserving this heritage so that it remains accessible, continues to be heard, and becomes part of the contemporary cultural landscape.
The project was implemented with the support of the Per Forma grant program, which is administered by the Kyiv Contemporary Music Days platform with support from the Performing Arts Fund NL and the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science.
The organizing partner is the NGO “ENOSIS—Society of Greeks of the Azov Region,” with the assistance of the Federation of Greek Societies of Ukraine.
