Slobozhansky embroidery as a cultural code: Donetsk Region museum holds scientific and artistic dialogue

Published 05 September 2025 year, 14:45

To mark Ukrainian Costume Day, the Donetsk Regional Art Museum held an online webinar entitled “Features of regional embroidery: Slobozhanshchyna.” The event brought together museum workers, scientists, folk art masters, and the public for a dialogue on the significance of Sloboda Ukraine embroidery as a component of national identity. In the context of war, this topic is particularly important, as intangible cultural heritage is our cultural code that helps us survive and preserve Ukrainian identity.

The webinar featured presentations by representatives of museums in the Kharkiv, Sumy, Luhansk, and Donetsk regions, as well as folk embroidery masters.  The speakers explained the concept of the “Sloboda code” in embroidery, talked about embroidery as an element of traditional Ukrainian costume, presented unique examples from museum collections, and shared their experience in preserving and developing traditional Sloboda embroidery.

The event concluded with a panel discussion, during which participants had the opportunity to exchange views and express their vision of the role of folk embroidery in the contemporary cultural space.
