On June 26-28, the European sumo championships for adults took place in Stirling, Scotland – the international competition brought together about 200 participants from 18 countries.
Athletes from the Bakhmut city community represented the Donetsk region as members of the Ukrainian national team at the European championships, winning six medals.
Oleksandr Veresiuk became a two-time European champion, winning gold in the open weight class and as a member of the men’s team. He also won a silver medal in the over-115 kg weight class.
Yelyzaveta Morenko also climbed to the top step of the podium twice – in the open weight class and as a member of the women’s team. In addition, she won a silver medal in the over 80 kg weight class.
The athletes were trained by Oleg Reva, an Honored coach of Ukraine, and coach Olga Mytnyk.
The performance of the athletes from Donetsk oblast made a significant contribution to the overall result of the Ukrainian national team, which took first place in the team standings at the European championships. The Ukrainian team won 28 medals – 13 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze.
