As part of the nationwide project “Side by Side: United Communities,” the communities of Toretsk, Kaniv, and Ruzhyn joined forces to honor historical memory and foster a conscious younger generation.
To mark the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, they jointly organized a symbolic photo flash mob titled “Umbrella of Memory.” Its main idea was to create emotional photographs featuring children holding paper umbrellas as a sign of gratitude, remembrance of the events of 1986, and faith in a safe future.
The image of the umbrella has become a profound symbol of protection, unity, and hope. Through this simple yet eloquent visual element, participants were able to convey an important message: remembering the past is the key to a responsible future.
Educational institutions, teachers, students, parents, and participants in the accident cleanup joined the initiative—all united by the desire to preserve the truth about the tragic pages of history and pass it on to future generations.
Together we remember. Together we build the future.
