To mark the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II, the State Historical and Architectural Reserve Administration in Sviatohirsk organized and held a creative workshop titled “Flower of Remembrance.” The event took place in Boryspil at the city’s children’s library, where it brought together children who are internally displaced persons from Donetsk Oblast and children of servicemen in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The initiative aimed to foster in children a respect for historical memory and an understanding of the significance of the symbols we use to honor the memory of the fallen. The use of art therapy elements helped create a safe space for self-expression, the development of fine motor skills, and the fostering of a sense of unity and mutual support among the participants.
The workshop began with a discussion of the red poppy’s significance as a symbol of remembrance, its history, and its role in Ukrainian culture. The hands-on portion transformed the space into a creative workshop where children crafted poppy flowers from satin ribbons. Each participant created their own piece, which became a symbol of remembrance and gratitude.
“The Flower of Remembrance” provided an important opportunity to reflect on history through art, and the handmade crafts became symbols of gratitude, remembrance, and respect for the past for the children, fostering a conscious and responsible attitude toward historical heritage.
