The main national holidays—Ukraine’s National Flag Day and Independence Day—are symbols of the unity, resilience, steadfastness, freedom, and self-sacrifice of the Ukrainian people; they unite Ukrainians around shared values, love for their homeland, freedom, and faith in the future.
This holiday takes on special significance for the residents of Donetsk Oblast, who were forced to leave their homes due to the full-scale war. Despite the distance from their hometowns and villages, people at the humanitarian hubs and centers in the Donetsk region continue to preserve traditions, support one another, and create a space where everyone can feel a connection to their homeland.
During these festive days, the humanitarian hubs and centers—established for residents of the Donetsk region in safe areas of Ukraine—held engaging informational and educational events, themed gatherings, patriotic sessions, exhibitions, workshops, creative contests, and cultural programs for children and adults, all of which help foster a Ukrainian national identity.
Events for children and youth hold a special place in the holiday programs. Young participants help create themed postcards and crafts, design national symbols, and take part in quizzes and educational activities about Ukrainian history and notable Ukrainians. Such gatherings help children learn more about their country and feel a sense of belonging to the Ukrainian community.
Numerous workshops brought together children and adults, who created symbols of our country with their own hands, decorated their projects in blue and yellow, made patriotic crafts, and learned more about Ukraine and its symbols.
The venues also hosted book and informational exhibitions dedicated to the history of Ukrainian statehood, culture, traditions, and the Ukrainian people’s struggle for freedom.
An important part of the events is honoring the Defenders of Ukraine, thanks to whom our country continues to fight for its freedom and territorial integrity. Participants in the events remember those who gave their lives for Ukraine and honor the memory of the fallen heroes with a moment of silence.
Today, the humanitarian hubs in Donetsk Oblast are not only places to receive aid but also spaces for unity, support, and the preservation of Ukrainian identity. It is here that people who were forced to leave their homes continue to come together, communicate, help one another, and celebrate important dates for Ukraine.
National Flag Day and Independence Day remind everyone that Ukraine is more than just a territory. It is its people, their memory, culture, language, traditions, freedom, and resilience. And as long as Ukrainians stand united, Ukraine remains unbreakable.
