Vaccines continue to arrive: even amid the war, immunization efforts in the Donetsk region continue unabated

Published 29 June 2026 year, 18:49

On June 25, 2026, the STATE INSTITUTION “DONETSK REGIONAL CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION OF THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH of Ukraine” received another shipment of vaccines—the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) and the reduced-antigen diphtheria and tetanus vaccine (ADP-M).

Despite the complex security situation and ongoing hostilities, the immunization system in Donetsk Oblast continues to operate without interruption. Specialists at the Donetsk Regional Center for Public Health ensure the receipt, storage, and transportation of vaccines in strict compliance with cold chain requirements. After all, each dose of vaccine must be stored at a specific temperature to remain safe and effective.

Upon arrival, the vaccines are promptly distributed among the region’s healthcare facilities in accordance with submitted requests and community needs. This ensures the uninterrupted administration of routine preventive vaccinations for children and adults.

Polio vaccination is of particular importance. This dangerous viral disease can lead to irreversible paralysis and even death. Despite significant advances in global medicine, the poliovirus still circulates in some countries around the world, and therefore the risk of its introduction remains a concern for any country.

Vaccination against diphtheria and tetanus is equally important. Diphtheria can cause severe damage to the heart, nervous system, and respiratory organs, while tetanus remains one of the most dangerous infections, with a mortality rate that remains quite high even with modern treatment. At the same time, tetanus cannot be eradicated, as its causative agent is constantly present in the environment, particularly in the soil.

Experience from many countries around the world shows that during wars, emergencies, and mass population displacement, the risk of infectious disease outbreaks increases significantly. That is why timely vaccination today is not only a matter of personal protection but also a vital component of public health and epidemic safety.

The Donetsk Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine continues its daily work to ensure that vaccines are available to every resident of the region and that communities remain protected from vaccine-preventable infections.

Let’s remember: every vaccination administered is a contribution to preventing outbreaks of dangerous diseases, preserving the health of children and adults, and protecting our shared future.
