On September 25, the Donetsk Regional Museum of Local History held an online meeting as part of the “Open Consultations” series. The topic of discussion was “Archaeological heritage in the war zone: structural features of sites and the specifics of their destruction (post-war research).”
The event was attended by representatives of various cultural institutions in Donetsk Oblast responsible for the accounting and preservation of cultural heritage.
Participants discussed the impact of hostilities on various types of archaeological sites, including burial mounds, campsites, settlements, and fortified settlements. Particular attention was paid to how their design and structural features affect the degree of preservation and the nature of damage.
Experts emphasize the need for systematic post-war research of all damaged cultural heritage sites, regardless of the degree of damage. Even partially damaged sites retain an important cultural and scientific context that is valuable for further study.
