Mariupol resident Oleh Chernobai and his wife Olena were killed on March 11, 2022, as a result of Russian shelling.
The couple lived with their son in an apartment building in Mariupol’s Central District. Oleh’s elderly parents also had an apartment in the same building. His father was bedridden, and his mother had severely impaired vision, requiring constant care. During the full-scale Russian invasion, the Chernobai family did not go down to the basement shelter, choosing instead to stay close to his parents.
On March 11, 2022, Oleh and Olena went outside to prepare food.
“A Russian aircraft launched several unguided rockets at the building near which Oleh and Olena were standing. They were waiting for their son, who was running down from the sixth floor to join them. The entire building shook, and everything was engulfed in smoke mixed with concrete dust. One rocket struck an apartment on the fifth floor, turning it into a pile of rubble. Debris rained down on Oleh. Another rocket hit a car parked near the entrance. The vehicle exploded, and pieces of metal flying in all directions became deadly. Our loved ones were killed by shrapnel wounds,” recalled Hanna, Oleh’s sister.
Oleh was 48 years old. He was born and raised in Mariupol. Together with his wife, he was raising their son. He worked as a software engineer.
“He was an open, sincere, intelligent, warm-hearted, determined, noble, and deeply loved person. A family man, husband, father, son, brother, and friend. His home was a place filled with peace, prosperity, and love. Every holiday, our large family gathered around his table, spending time together in heartfelt conversations,” Hanna said.
Oleh cared for his parents, supported his nephew and sister, and deeply loved his family. He was a genuinely kind person.
“Oleh was not a teacher, yet his life offers countless valuable lessons. He was a person with a capital ‘P.’ He always knew how to find joy in the little things. It is rare to meet someone whose life not only received happiness but also gave it to everyone around him through his actions, aspirations, energy, and care. His life made those around him happier,” his sister added.
Oleh and his wife Olena were laid to rest at the Starokrymske Cemetery. They are survived by their son, nephew, parents, and sisters.
