Nationwide minute of silence

Published 14 January 2026 year, 09:00

The life of 39-year-old Nataliia Matviienko was taken by the shelling of Mariupol on March 20, 2022. At around 5:00 p.m., a projectile hit her house on Teslenka Street. Nataliia’s son, 9-year-old Illia, was nearby and sustained severe injuries.

“Shrapnel hit my daughter in the head, and she died the next day. Illia’s left thigh was torn off, and a large fragment got stuck in his right leg. A neighbor buried Nataliia in the yard. Illia’s life was saved. He still has small fragments in his body,” said Olena, the mother of the deceased.

Nataliia Matviienko was born and lived in Mariupol. She studied at School No. 39. Until 2014, she worked as a vendor at the market. Later, she took care of the household and raised her children. She sewed bags from old clothes.

“Nataliia’s life did not always turn out the way she wanted, especially her personal life… My daughter was beautiful and hardworking. Kind, sincere, cheerful. A loving mother. I did not see her dead, so even though my mind understands it, my heart does not accept it,” Olena Matviienko added.

The place of her burial is unknown.

At 9:00 a.m. — a nationwide minute of silence.
