Little Karolina lived in the Central District of Mariupol with her mother Anastasia, father Oleksandr, and older sister Valeria. After the start of the full-scale war, the family moved to Oleksandr’s parents’ home on Zelinsky Street.
Until March 11, they all hid together in a basement. But a strike on a neighboring house claimed dozens of lives, and they moved to the Drama Theater.
On March 16, 2022, an airstrike hit the theater. Karolina, who was 2 years and 7 months old, was on the second floor with her mother. Both were killed. The father died at a field kitchen. Only the older sister survived.
“Karolina was cheerful, restless, loved books, cartoons, and her toy duck. She never had the chance to go to kindergarten,” her grandmother Iryna said.
The family was unable to bury their granddaughter and daughter-in-law.
