56-Year-Old Svitlana Metlyakova Killed in Mariupol Alongside Her Husband Oleksandr
On March 16, 2022, they were cooking in the entrance hall of their building on Myru Avenue, in the central district of Mariupol, when shelling began.
“The last time I saw my mother and father was on March 13. After that, I had to stay in a shelter with my son. I learned about my parents’ death in April from neighbors. I found my father when I was leaving the city, but no one gave me his body. My mother’s body I never found… Many people were killed in that entrance hall,” said their daughter, Karina Kiryakova.
Svitlana Metlyakova was born and lived in Mariupol. She worked as the chief secretary of the Khmelnytskyi Committee of Self-Organization of the Population, where she helped children with disabilities, elderly people, and everyone else in need of support.
“They were the best parents. I really hope that one day I will be able to visit their grave,” added Karina Kiryakova.
Svitlana Metlyakova is survived by her daughter and grandson.
