Doctor Andrii Hnatiuk Was Executed by Russian Forces
On March 27, Doctor Andrii Hnatiuk and a driver left the hospital in Mariupol by car to fetch water from a well. After that, both men went missing. On April 26, Andrii’s bullet-riddled body was discovered on one of the city streets. His identity was confirmed by documents. The driver’s body was found nearby.
“They were found on April 26. Next to the car, which was destroyed and riddled with bullets, standing among tulips,” wrote Andrii’s relative, Liliiana Fidelska.
Andrii Hnatiuk graduated from the Donetsk State Medical University named after M. Gorky. He had worked in medicine since 1998 and held the title of highest-category general practitioner. He was head of the therapeutic department at Hospital No. 4 in Mariupol.
From the first days of the war, he helped wounded residents of the city under constant shelling.
“People used to say — Andrii Ivanovych was a doctor sent by God! His colleagues respected his opinion, and patients trusted him. He did everything he could to save lives in Mariupol,” wrote the doctor’s family friend, Olena Vlasiuk.
Doctor Andrii Hnatiuk was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit, 3rd Class.
