The life of 42-year-old Kateryna Savenko was cut short in Mariupol on April 4, 2022. She survived the shelling of her home, the death of her husband, and another strike on the hospital — but did not survive her injuries.
On March 29, Russian forces shelled her home. Vitalii was killed on the spot, and Kateryna was seriously wounded. She was taken to Hospital No. 1. On April 2, the ward where she was staying came under fire again, and a fire broke out. Many believed that Kateryna had died that day. But she survived — she fell from a window, and her mother and mother-in-law found her there. She held on for two more days. On April 4, she died from her injuries.
From the first day of the full-scale war, Kateryna kept a diary and asked that if anything happened to her, it should be found and the truth about Mariupol shared with the world.
Kateryna is survived by her daughter, parents, sister, and niece.
At 9:00 — a nationwide minute of silence. The Donetsk Regional Military Administration and the Memorial platform honor residents of the Donetsk region killed by Russian forces.
