Nationwide minute of silence

Published 30 April 2026 year, 09:00

Vitalii Savenko was killed in Mariupol on March 29, 2022, during a repeated shelling. He ran out of the basement to check whether the building had caught fire after the strike — and at that moment, Russian forces struck again.

He was 47 years old. Together with his wife Kateryna, he worked at the Illich Iron and Steel Works. They lived in the Kalmiuskyi district and were raising their daughter. During the invasion, they stayed at home, sheltering in the basement.

Kateryna also did not survive the war. After being wounded, she was taken to Hospital No. 1. On April 2, the ward where she was staying came under fire, and a fire broke out. Kateryna survived, fell from a window, and was found by her relatives. But a few days later, she died from her injuries.

Vitalii is remembered as a sincere and kind-hearted person who loved children, helped others, and deeply cared for his family.

He is survived by his daughter, parents, brother, and nephews.

At 9:00 — a nationwide minute of silence. The Donetsk Regional Military Administration and the Memorial platform “Killed by Russia” honor the residents of Donetsk region killed by Russian forces.
