October 12 – Military Chaplain Day

Published 12 October 2026 year, 08:30

October 12 is Military Chaplain Day in Ukraine. This professional holiday honors those who carry out a special and self-sacrificing mission—military chaplains who, without weapons in their hands but with unwavering faith, words of encouragement, and prayer, stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine’s defenders. They provide spiritual strength, encouragement, and support for the religious needs of service members in combat zones, at training grounds, in hospitals, and at their permanent bases.

The history of this commemoration is closely linked to Saint Martin the Merciful, Bishop of Tours, whose feast day according to the New Julian calendar falls precisely on October 12. Saint Martin is considered the first historical patron and founder of the military chaplaincy. According to biblical tradition, Martin served in the Roman army and, one cold winter day, encountered a beggar who was freezing and gave him half of his military cloak. Later, this relic, known as a “cappa,” was kept in a special portable chapel, and the military priest responsible for it and for conducting services came to be called a chaplain.

From the very first days of Ukraine’s War of Independence, clergy of various religious denominations went to the front as volunteers. They purchased protective gear, delivered humanitarian aid, and provided spiritual support to soldiers in the hottest battle zones. In 2016, the Armed Forces of Ukraine began the official implementation of chaplain positions as civilian employees, and on November 30, 2021, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the historic Law of Ukraine “On the Military Chaplaincy Service,” which completely transformed the structure of this institution. Chaplains were officially integrated into the ranks of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

Key areas of a chaplain’s work include pastoral care, which involves performing religious rites, hearing confessions, administering Holy Communion and baptisms, and leading prayers and prayer services for soldiers. An important component is providing spiritual and psychological support to soldiers to help them cope with combat stress, fear of death, adapt to critical situations, and prevent post-traumatic stress disorder. Chaplains also provide ethical counseling, advising unit commanders on religious matters and ensuring that religious traditions are taken into account when planning internal routines. Another major area of work involves serving in hospitals, supporting veterans, and providing pastoral care to the families of fallen heroes, prisoners of war, or those missing in action.

Military chaplains are healers of the human soul in wartime, helping service members preserve their humanity amid cruelty and not lose their inner light.
