June 14 – World Blood Donor Day

Published 14 June 2026 year, 10:00

Every year on June 14, the world celebrates World Blood Donor Day. This day was established by World Health Assembly resolution WHA 58.13 in 2005 to express gratitude to voluntary, unpaid blood donors and to raise awareness of the importance of regular blood donation for the healthcare system.

The date was not chosen at random. It was on June 14, 1868, that Austrian physician and immunologist Karl Landsteiner was born; he discovered the major human blood groups in the early 20th century. This discovery became one of the most important achievements in medical science, as it enabled safe blood transfusions and saved millions of lives. In 1930, the scientist was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his scientific achievements.

Blood donation is an essential component of modern medicine. Every day, blood components are needed by patients undergoing complex surgeries, cancer treatments, severe injuries, burns, complicated childbirth, and many other conditions. A single blood donation can save several lives, as blood is separated into individual components that are used to help different patients.

Blood donation has taken on special significance for Ukraine amid the ongoing War for Independence. As a result of the hostilities, the need for blood supplies and blood components has increased significantly. Donated blood helps save the lives of wounded military personnel, civilians, and those affected by shelling and other consequences of the war every day. Thousands of Ukrainians have become donors, demonstrating solidarity, responsibility, and a willingness to help those in need.

Every year, approximately 500,000 people in Ukraine become blood donors. Thanks to regular, voluntary, and unpaid donations of blood and its components, millions of lives are saved. By donating blood, a donor gives someone a chance at life and makes an invaluable contribution to a good cause.

The need for donated blood in the Donetsk region is extremely urgent, as the region faces enemy attacks every day. We urge everyone to join this noble mission. Your blood could be a lifesaver for someone at the most critical moment.

You can donate blood and receive basic counseling on contraindications and preparation at your nearest blood center.
