October 15 - International White Cane Day

Published 15 October 2025 year, 12:14

A white cane is not just a means of orientation in space. It is a symbol of independence and strength of a person living with visual impairments. This day draws public attention to the needs, rights and dignity of people with visual impairments. It is also a reminder of the importance of creating a barrier-free environment - in communities, institutions, transportation, and digital services.

In the context of a full-scale war, the importance of this topic is growing. Among Ukrainian veterans, there are those who have lost their eyesight in whole or in part as a result of hostilities. They need not only medical care, but also support in recovery, reintegration, training, employment, and adaptation to new living conditions. This is where the systemic role of the state is important.

The Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine is already implementing a pilot project for visually impaired veterans with adaptation services, orientation training, Braille, support and rehabilitation. This approach covers all levels of support, from medical facilities and specialized institutions to community outreach.

International White Cane Day is another reason to talk about respect, accessibility and real support. And that even in the new reality, a person has the right to a decent, active life.
