October 2 - International Day Against Violence

Published 02 October 2025 year, 08:00

October 2 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence. This day was established by the UN General Assembly in 2007 and is dedicated to the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, a well-known advocate of non-violent struggle. The UN resolution states that the International Day of Non-Violence serves as an additional occasion to "promote nonviolence, in particular through education and public awareness"

Non-violence is a method of resisting violence without violent means through commitment, solidarity, education, and negotiation. The principle of nonviolence makes it impossible to use physical violence to achieve social or political change. This form of social struggle has been massively adopted by people around the world in campaigns for social justice.

At the same time, nonviolent actions in society, which are used to develop skills to maintain peaceful relations and prevent conflicts, begin with the application of the model of nonviolent relations in the family.

We are used to thinking that violence is mostly physical intentional infliction of beatings or other bodily harm. However, violence can also be sexual, psychological and economic.

Overcoming the problem of violence is a serious challenge for society. It is necessary to draw the attention of all segments of the population to this topic in order to form an intransigent attitude to this phenomenon in society.

An important element in instilling in the minds of citizens is the notion that any violence against a person is unacceptable (regardless of gender or age). Only by raising a conscious generation can we overcome this universal problem.

Violence exists in any country. However, its percentage is especially high in countries with low standards of living and where there are military conflicts.

This day reminds us that violence, in any form, cannot be justified. It calls for peaceful resolution of problems, mutual understanding and respect.
