On May 9, Ukraine and the European Union celebrate Europe Day. This holiday symbolizes the unity of the European peoples around shared democratic values, human rights and freedoms, respect for the rule of law, and peace.
After World War II, Europe lay in ruins. For economic recovery, it was necessary to put aside historical animosities, particularly between France and Germany, and begin working together to build a shared future.
One of those who proposed putting the common European project into practice was French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman. On May 9, 1950, a document was signed that went down in history as the “Schuman Declaration.” The declaration proposed the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community. But a prerequisite for this was Franco-German reconciliation.
Economic integration between France and Germany eventually spread to other countries in Western Europe. In April 1951, the Treaty of Paris was signed, establishing the European Coal and Steel Community. The founding members of the Community were France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The treaty entered into force in 1952 and remained in effect until 2002.
Europe Day was first recognized as a holiday by the Council of Europe in 1964. As early as 1985, the European Communities recognized Europe Day as a holiday in the EU. The date of May 9 was not chosen by chance, but to honor Robert Schuman’s contribution to European integration. At a meeting in Milan in June 1985, the European Council established Europe Day as a holiday along with the European flag. The European Parliament recognized Europe Day in 2008.
Europe Day is one of the symbols of the European Union—along with the flag, the euro, the anthem, and the motto.
In Ukraine, Europe Day began to be celebrated in 2003. At that time, it was observed on the third Saturday of May. Starting in 2023, the date of the holiday was aligned with the pan-European calendar. Today, this day is celebrated not only by member states but also by candidates for EU membership.
Ukraine has clearly declared its choice of European integration and enshrined it in the Constitution. This choice represents a commitment to democratic development, adherence to the principles of the rule of law, the protection of human rights and freedoms, social justice, and sustainable economic growth.
For over 12 years now, Ukrainians have been taking up arms to defend not only their land but also their European choice, the foundations of a peaceful European order, and the security of the entire continent. On this path, we are supported by the European Union, which has stood shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine since the very first days of Russia’s full-scale aggression.
Since the start of Russian aggression, Ukraine, together with its European partners, has launched a series of initiatives and concrete measures to support key sectors: these include visa-free travel for transport, projects to develop border infrastructure, and financial mechanisms and funds to maintain, restore, and develop entire industries.
Europe Day is not about the past, but first and foremost about the future. Our common task is to defend and build a new Europe that will be stronger and more successful.
