Artem Zhabich, 38, has been in a wheelchair since childhood, but he loves sports and has even competed in wheelchair racing. In 2009, he underwent a course of active rehabilitation in Yevpatoria at the National Center for Paralympic and Deaflympic Training. He still recalls that experience with excitement.
In March 2026, due to constant enemy shelling and drone attacks, he was forced to evacuate from his hometown of Kramatorsk. Artem realized that for his safety, he had to leave, as people were dying nearby under constant shelling.
He contacted the call center of the “Sхід SOS” Charitable Foundation, whose number he had saved earlier from social media. The evacuation team transported him to a transit center in Lozova and later helped him find accommodation at the “Ocean of Goodness” NGO’s Social Adaptation Center for People with Disabilities in Dnipro. There, Artem discovered a rehabilitation room equipped with modern equipment and actively trained under the supervision of specialists.
The team at the “Skhid SOS” Charitable Foundation helped the man obtain a passport and, in partnership with the “Barrier-Free Foundation” Charitable Foundation, found him a place to settle abroad. Artem made his way to the German city of Celle, where he finally feels safe and is looking forward to meeting his nephew, who also lives in Germany.
“Due to the lack of housing options for people with disabilities in Ukraine, international support and cooperation with partners are extremely important to us in our search for safe and comfortable housing in an accessible environment abroad. Since the beginning of 2026, we have already managed to resettle 34 people evacuated from the front lines in Denmark and Germany,” notes Olga Vladimirova, medical support manager and member of the evacuation team at the “Sхід SOS” Charitable Foundation.
The “Sхід SOS” Charitable Foundation team helps older people, people with disabilities, families with children, and pet owners escape danger. We provide support at every stage of the rescue: from departure to finding places to stay and traveling to relatives.
