Why Russia refuses to hold an international air show for the third year in a row

Published 04 June 2025 year, 12:30

One of Russia's most high-profile aviation events, the International Aviation and Space Salon (MAKS), will not take place this year. The event has been postponed for the third year in a row, ostensibly for security reasons.

But the real reasons are quite natural - there is nothing to show. Russia has failed all key civil aviation projects - flagship developments, such as the MS-21 and SJ-100, have not been implemented. And Western companies will not come to Moscow because of sanctions.

This was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation.

The aviation industry is one of the most affected by the sanctions. Due to the ban on the supply of components and the withdrawal of leading aircraft companies from the Russian market, it is on the verge of collapse. Military aviation is also in a bad situation, especially in the context of a recent successful attack by Ukrainian drones on airfields.

Russia is refusing to hold the MAKS air show, which used to serve as a platform for demonstrating its "aviation greatness", in order not to show the world the real state of the industry, which has been brought to a standstill due to the war.
