In our “Q&A” section, we explain: Are unemployment benefits suspended if a person who was registered with the employment service has left the country due to the war?
Due to the full-scale war, many Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes and flee the country. In such situations, people often wonder: what happens to their unemployment status and benefits if they are abroad?
If a registered unemployed person leaves Ukraine, they must notify the employment service. This must be done within 3 business days before crossing the border. If the stay abroad lasts more than 30 calendar days, an application to terminate unemployment registration must be submitted.
This is because, while a person is abroad, the employment service is unable to provide full services, and the person, in turn, cannot fulfill the obligations of a registered unemployed person—specifically, visiting employers, participating in job placement, and interacting with the employment service in accordance with established procedures.
At the same time, it is important to know that upon returning to Ukraine, a person has the right to reapply to any employment center to reinstate their unemployed status and receive unemployment benefits in accordance with the law.
The employment service continues to work to support citizens and help people return to active professional life even under difficult circumstances.
