To mark Ukrainian Literacy and Language Day, the Donetsk Regional Youth Center held an online meeting titled “The Language That Was Banned.”
During the event, participants learned about the key stages in the history of the Ukrainian language and discovered the historical bans and restrictions on its use in publishing, education, and cultural life. Special attention was paid to how the Ukrainian language was preserved and developed despite attempts to suppress it from public life.
Oleksiy Servetnik, a representative of the First Interregional Department of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, joined the meeting. He spoke about important historical events related to the bans on the Ukrainian language and the struggle for its restoration during various periods.
The event took place in an interactive format. Participants answered questions, discussed historical facts, and shared their thoughts on the significance of the Ukrainian language in contemporary society.
The history of the Ukrainian language bears witness to a long struggle for the right to speak, study, read, and create in one’s native language. Knowledge of these historical events helps us better appreciate its value, respect our cultural heritage, and understand the role of language in preserving Ukrainian national identity.
The event was organized by the Donetsk Regional Youth Center with the support of the Department of Family, Youth, and Public Events for National-Patriotic Education of the Donetsk Regional State Administration.
