Donetsk Region selected the best athletes and coaches in September 2025

The Department of physical culture and sports of the Donetsk regional state administration continues to summarize the results of the region's athletes' performances at national and international competitions on a monthly basis.

The best athletes of September were determined in three categories: olympic, non-olympic sports and sports for people with disabilities. The voting was conducted among the expert group of the Department of physical culture and sports of the Donetsk regional state administration and fans on Facebook.

Oleksandr Hrushyn, an international-class master of sports of Ukraine in greco-roman wrestling, was named athlete of the month among the olympians. At the Senior World Championships in Croatia, he took fifth place in the 63 kg weight category, defeating representatives from Bulgaria and Kazakhstan.

The winner of the best athlete nomination among non-olympic athletes is Vasyl Zbandut, master of sports of Ukraine in powerlifting, representative of the Mangush community. At the World Championships in Costa Rica, among juniors in the 93 kg weight category he won gold in the total, squat (with a junior world record) and deadlift, bronze in the bench press, and also came second among best lifters of juniors by IPF GL formula. Vasyl's coach, his father Ivan Zbandut, honored coach of Ukraine, was named the best of the Donetsk region in non-olympic sports in September.

In the category “Sports for people with disabilities”, representatives of the Donetsk regional children's and youth sports school for people with disabilities, the Donetsk regional center “Invasport” and the city Sloviansk were recognized: honored master of sports of ukraine in para swimming Andriy Trusov and honored coach of Ukraine Andriy Kaznacheyev. In the competition among swimmers with musculoskeletal disorders at the World Championships in Singapore, Trusov won four gold medals: in disciplines 100 m backstroke and 50 m butterfly, and 50 m and 100 m freestyle – with championship records.
