On April 2, representatives of the Donetsk Regional State Administration took part in the 17th meeting of the “Heroes’ Policy and Support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine” Commission of the Congress of Local Authorities under the President of Ukraine. The meeting was chaired by Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Head of the Office of the President.

Participants discussed the status of preparation and conceptual foundations of the draft Veterans’ Code, the progress of drafting, coordinating, and adopting regulatory and legal acts, as well as the issue of reburying fallen Defenders of Ukraine from frontline territories at the National Military Memorial Cemetery.

Deputy Head of the Regional State Administration Oleksandr Shevchenko presented Donetsk Oblast’s experience in the field of commemorating and honoring the defenders of Ukraine. He presented a demo version of a burial map containing information on burial sites in the region’s local communities, as well as a registry of fallen Defenders of Ukraine who were residents of Donetsk Oblast.

Oleksandr Shevchenko also emphasized the need to amend the Law of Ukraine “On Burial and Funeral Services.” He stressed the importance of regulating the mechanism for the reburial of the Defenders of Ukraine buried in frontline regions to prevent the destruction of graves and acts of desecration.

The meeting participants emphasized the importance of a systematic state policy regarding the commemoration of Ukraine’s defenders, as well as the need for close cooperation among government agencies at all levels to implement relevant decisions and support the families of the fallen.
