The memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine’s freedom is preserved not only through commemorative dates and memorials. It lives on in names, portraits, personal stories, the memories of loved ones, and in our willingness to share the stories of those thanks to whom Ukraine continues to fight.
The Donetsk Regional Children’s Library has launched a thematic section titled “Heros Who Died for Ukraine’s Freedom,” dedicated to Ukrainian women who died defending their country.
The goal of the initiative is to preserve the memory of the fallen defenders and to share their life stories, military service, beliefs, and dreams. Behind every name lies a unique story, a distinct personality, and a life cut short by the war. Sharing the stories of these fallen heroines means ensuring these stories do not fade from our collective memory.
The column is published every week on the official Facebook page of the Donetsk Regional Children’s Library.
The column is based on informational materials and original works by Olena Bilozerska, an officer in the Armed Forces of Ukraine—graphic portraits of the fallen female defenders, created with a gel pen on paper, along with stories about them. The combination of artistic imagery and biographical details helps us see a real person behind each name, learn their story, and honor their memory.
The library is consistently expanding this initiative, using the possibilities of the digital space to disseminate socially important information about the Donetsk region, the people who have brought honor to their homeland and its heroes, and continue to do so. After all, even while working remotely, the library can be a place where memories are preserved, passed on to future generations, and where people are helped to feel a connection to their country and its history.
We invite everyone to join us in preserving the memory of Ukraine’s fallen female defenders. Read the posts in this section, share them, and tell others about them. Such simple actions help spread awareness of Ukrainian heroines and keep their names alive in the public consciousness.
