British author J.K. Rowling sent a letter and a personally signed book to Ukrainian defender Oleksandr Ivanov, who spent 1,494 days in Russian captivity. This was reported by the NGO Ukraine WOW.
At the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Oleksandr Ivanov defended Mariupol as part of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade. After the battles at the Ilyich Plant, he was taken prisoner by the Russians, where he spent more than four years.
While in captivity, Oleksandr Ivanov retold all seven Harry Potter books to other Ukrainian prisoners of war, helping them get through the difficult days of captivity. The Marine became fascinated with the world of Harry Potter as a child. He reread J.K. Rowling’s books countless times and even learned them almost by heart.
The nonprofit organization Ukraine WOW, upon learning of Oleksandr’s story, decided to reach out to J.K. Rowling. In response, the British author wrote a letter to Oleksandr offering words of support:
“I’ve heard that you’re a big fan of Harry Potter and that these stories were a source of support for you during your captivity in Russia. I’m so glad to hear that you’ve been released and have returned home to Ukraine. I wish you a long and happy life from the bottom of my heart.”
According to Alexander, receiving such a letter came as a complete surprise to him:
“When I was in captivity, I couldn’t even imagine that one day I would receive a letter from J.K. Rowling. Her books helped me and my comrades keep hope alive, and her words were a great source of support for me. I am very happy and infinitely grateful. Sincerely yours, Majorchik, the survivor,” said Marine Alexander Ivanov.
