The Holodomor of 1932–1933: online dialogue with young people from Donetsk region about crime and memory

Published 19 November 2025 year, 16:55

On November 19, 2025, on the eve of the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holodomor, the Department of Family, Youth, and Mass Events of National Patriotic Education of the Regional State Administration, together with the State Archives of Donetsk Region and the Center for Unity and National Resistance platform, held a thematic online dialogue for young people in Donetsk Region.

The event was dedicated to one of the most tragic pages in Ukrainian history — the Holodomor of 1932–1933, which was a great national catastrophe. The purpose of the meeting was not only to discuss historical facts, but also to reflect on the deliberate extermination of the Ukrainian people by Stalin's totalitarian regime, as well as to convey the truth to the younger generation so that such events never happen again. In the dialogue, the participants touched not only on the nationwide scale of the tragedy, but also on the horrific events that did not spare the Donetsk region.

Particular emphasis was placed on primary documents and human destinies. It was emphasized that the policy of forced collectivization, excessive grain procurement plans, and repressive measures, such as placing villages on “blacklists,” were aimed at the complete economic and moral destruction of the Ukrainian village.

Memories of eyewitnesses from the villages of Yelizavetivka, Bohoyavlenka, and Krasnohorivka were read aloud.

Employees of the State Archives of Donetsk Oblast drew attention to the fact that after the occupation of Donetsk by the Russian Federation, all original documents and evidence of the Holodomor, including volumes of the “National Book of Memory of the Victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Donetsk Oblast,” remained in the temporarily occupied territory. There is a great danger that these archives, which are direct evidence of the criminal policy of the Soviet regime, whose successor Russia openly calls itself today, could be destroyed or removed.

The Holodomor is a crime against the Ukrainian people, and the memory of it is a symbol of the indomitability of our spirit. As then, today the Russian authorities continue to lie, justifying their crimes, and are trying to destroy Ukrainians as a nation.

Every year on the fourth Saturday of November (which this year falls on November 22), Ukraine honors the memory of the victims of the Holodomor. The organizers called on the youth of Donetsk and all Ukrainians to light a candle on this day as a symbol of the indestructibility of our nation and its dignity.
