Greeks in Lviv Will Celebrate Panayir for the First Time

Published 10 August 2026 year, 16:49

On September 4, Lviv will host the Panayir—a traditional religious, community, and family festival of the Greeks of Ukraine. This will be the first time the event is held in Lviv, where the Greek community has a history spanning more than 600 years.

This was reported by the Federation of Greek Societies of Ukraine.

The word “Panayir” comes from the ancient Greek word πανηγύρι, meaning “general gathering.” Traditionally, the festival has brought the community together through shared prayer, meals, music, dancing, and other cultural traditions.

The event program includes performances by Greek artistic groups, exhibitions of works by artists of Greek descent and cultural heritage, a cultural lecture on the history and traditions of Greeks in Ukraine, traditional Greek cuisine, and a demonstration of the kuresh wrestling style.

The event is organized by the Federation of Greek Societies of Ukraine, the Kava Foundation, the ENOSIS Greek Society, and the Kornaktos Western Ukrainian Greek Society.
