On September 15-18, the 27th ICCD European Deaf Chess Club Team Championship for athletes with hearing impairments took place in Stavanger, Norway.
Ten teams participated in the competition: one each from Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway and Slovakia; and two each from Great Britain, Poland and Ukraine.
The Donetsk region was represented at the tournament by the “Unbreakable” team, which consisted of four chess players: Tetyana Baklanova from Mariupol, a honored master of sports of Ukraine; Oleksiy Filippskykh from Kramatorsk, an international class master of sports of Ukraine; Vadym Bilyi, an international class master of sports of Ukraine; and Georgiy Metreveli, an athlete from the Dnipropetrovsk oblast.
After a hard-fought competition, the “Unbreakables” scored 12 points. Tied on points with the Polish team “Slaski Deaf Club Rybnik,” the Donetsk region representatives edged out their rivals on a tiebreaker and were crowned champions of the European club championship.
Tetyana Baklanova achieved a notable individual success, posting the best result among the players competing on the second board and taking first place.
