As part of European Heritage Days in Ukraine and the nationwide initiative “Heritage at Risk: Stories Worth Preserving,” representatives of the Kurakhiv community and bearers of an element of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine, during a trip to the Vinnytsia region, held a presentation for children and youth titled “Dachne Vareniki—A Tradition That Unites Generations.”
The event centered on Dachne varenyky with nettles and cheese, the tradition of preparing which is an element of the Kurakhiv community’s intangible cultural heritage.
Participants learned about the distinctive features of this traditional dish, its history, and significance, and also took part in learning how to make the varenyky.
Special attention during the meeting was given to the presentation of branded products created to promote the Dachne tradition.
Event participants received booklets with information about this element of intangible cultural heritage, so that knowledge of the tradition would not only be retained during the meeting but would also continue to spread among young people.
For the Kurakhiv community, which today lives far from their homeland, such gatherings offer an opportunity to preserve and pass on the traditions of their region to the younger generation through communication, collaborative work, and exposure to the culture of their fellow countrymen.
After all, a tradition lives on when it is studied, passed down, and carried forward.
