Lyudmyla Omelchenko: a history teacher who became a Warrior

Published 29 June 2025 year, 12:07

On June 28, 2025, it will be 29 years since the Constitution of Ukraine was adopted. This year, we will once again celebrate the national holiday in the conditions of armed aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

Despite the horrors of war, life in Donetsk region continues: children continue to receive education, residents of the region have access to medical and social services, and conditions are being created for the development of creative abilities, etc.

On the occasion of Constitution Day of Ukraine, the regional state administration has launched a regional campaign "The Constitution of Ukraine through the prism of war." The stories of the residents of Donetsk region once again prove that even in a state of war, the commitment to constitutional principles is important for the Ukrainian state – the affirmation of human rights and freedoms, compliance with universal and European values, which the Ukrainian people bravely defend in the current conditions, protecting freedom, territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty of Ukraine.

Article 65. The defense of the Fatherland, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and respect for its state symbols is the duty of citizens of Ukraine.

History teacher Lyudmila Omelchenko, during the trials that have befallen Ukraine, did not hesitate to put on a military uniform and stand up to defend her native land.

Even before the war, students rushed to her lessons because Lyudmila Omelchenko did not just teach — she taught them to seek the truth, to understand their roots. In 2015, she took off her embroidered shirt, put on a military uniform, and went to the front. She said: "I cannot stand behind my students while their parents are dying for our future."

When she returned, her school was already under occupation. But Lyudmila is convinced: a school is not just walls, and no circumstances can prevent her from communicating with her students and conducting a full educational process. She continues to teach children online. The lessons have become deeper, more emotional. She teaches choice. She teaches not to be afraid.

"History is not the past. It is our actions today," says Lyudmila Omelchenko. She dreams of peace, but if Ukraine calls — she will be there again.

Her voice resonates through any silence. Because in it — there is resilience.

Donetsk region is proud of its educators! We believe that with each passing year, there will be even more opportunities to reveal their professionalism and further support them.
