"Young Person of the Year – 2026" – Dmytro Zonenko

Published 23 July 2026 year, 12:32

Dmytro Zonenko is a participant in the regional competition “Young Person of the Year – 2026” in the “Unbreakable Will” category

Dmytro Zonenko was born and raised in Druzhkivka, Donetsk Oblast. In 2023, he consciously chose to become a defender of Ukraine by signing a contract for military service. He served as a grenadier in a mechanized battalion, faithfully carried out combat missions, and was repeatedly commended by his commanders for his responsible attitude toward his service.

On June 19, 2024, he was granted combatant status. Just two days later, while carrying out a combat mission in Luhansk Oblast, he was severely wounded when he stepped on a landmine. He suffered multiple fractures, shrapnel wounds, and an eye injury. As a result of his injuries, both of his lower limbs had to be amputated. What followed was intensive care, numerous surgeries, and a long rehabilitation process.

Despite these severe trials, Dmytro did not lose his spirit. Today, he continues his rehabilitation, is learning to use prosthetics, sets new goals for himself, and strives to support other veterans who are on the path to recovery from their injuries. In 2026, thanks to government support, he received a specially adapted vehicle, which allowed him to become more mobile and independent.

Dmytro is convinced that resilience lies not only in bravery on the battlefield, but also in the ability to never give up after facing the toughest challenges. Through his example, he proves that willpower, self-belief, and love for Ukraine help him move forward and inspire others not to lose hope.
