Yevgen Checheta, a participant in the regional “Young Person of the Year – 2026” competition in the “Knowledge Leaders” category
Yevhen Checheta is a Master of Sport of Ukraine in rugby, a member of the Ukrainian national rugby team and a native of Donetsk Region. He spent most of his life in Selidove, where his sporting journey began and eventually led him to professional rugby.
Yevhen became involved in sports as a child, trying boxing, karate and weightlifting. In 2017, he attended his first rugby training session and realized that this was the sport he wanted to devote his life to.
Today, his achievements include participation in more than ten European Championships as part of the Ukrainian national team, around ten Ukrainian championship titles, Ukrainian Cup victories, as well as the title of European champion and a European Championship medal. Yevhen currently plays for Rugby Club Kyiv, which in just two years has won the Ukrainian Cup and become a two-time Ukrainian Rugby Sevens champion.
The full-scale war forced the athlete to leave his native region, experience displacement and lose a significant part of his sporting awards. However, these challenges did not stop him.
For Yevhen, rugby is more than just a sport. It is a school of teamwork, discipline and responsibility. Through his performances, he continues to represent Ukraine on the international stage and aims to contribute to the development of Ukrainian rugby.
